ÒThe Mississippi Delta BluesÉBack to Africa TourÓ
BringinÕ Blues to where it began!
(Indianola, MS – July, 2009) – The Mississippi Delta Blues community is finally paying homage to Africa. The recently announced project called, ÒMississippi Delta BluesÉBack to Africa TourÓ is the brainchild of C.Sade Turnipseed Managing Director of KHAFRE Productions; along with partner, Robert Terrell, of Terrell and Associates, both Mississippi Delta residents, are on an uncompromising mission to reconnect blues to its original source, Africa.
The fact that Blues is the foundation of American Roots music is a remarkable realization. Over the years Blues music has migrated from the Middle Passage scourges, to the tear/sweat/blood-soaked cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta and the Deep South, to the Far East and throughout Europe with the distinctive sounds of love lost and hope gained; encoded messages of ÒsurvivalÓ that continue to resonate and influence all genres of contemporary music. But, in Africa blues music has yet to have a substantial impactÉhow ironic!
The Mississippi Delta-based KHAFRE Productions is at the forefront of making this change. ÒWe are teamed with blues musicians, festival promoters, political officials, cultural ambassadors, museums, International Blues Societies and others for the expressed purpose of reconnecting Mississippi Delta Blues, to its African source. The plan is to bring Mississippi Delta blues to all fifty-four countries of the African continent.Ó stated Turnipseed.
ÒWe are continuing the movement,Ó proclaimed Turnipseed. ÒAnd, we would like to share the moments with the world, as we reconnect the Mississippi Delta blues music to its traditional African culture(s). This effort will be thoroughly documented and presented as a series of films, books and other methods that will be shared educationally and culturally through heritage programs that emphasize the ÒauthenticityÓ of Blues, as American root music. In the process, we shall juxtapose Mississippi blues musicians and scholars with African Griots and musicians! We call it the ÒMississippi Delta BluesÉBack to Africa Tour.Ó Turnipseed continued.
ÒAlthough the Blues has sprouted up in many countries, we feel itÕs only fitting that it be rooted, again, in Africa. And we need the blessings of our colleagues, friends and well-wishers to insure the success of such a monumental effort.Ó Commented Terrell. ÒWe celebrate the opportunities presented. Our first destination is and must be Africa! And, with great anticipation of your support, together we are ÒbringinÕ the Blues back home,Ó said Terrell
ÒAs a country, the United States of America is fortunate to embrace rhythms and melodies that resonate our discourse of pain in such a harmonious authentic sound, known as the BluesÉ we are returning to the vital soils of the Motherland Africa, with deep pain in our souls, but joy in our hearts,Ó Turnipseed continued. The first three stops of the tour are scheduled for Burkina Faso, Mali and Ivory Coast. Stay tuned for more updates; and opportunities for well wishers from the Mississippi Delta communities to participate.
